Garbage Disposal Tips

The common garbage disposal unit has become a crucial appliance in every kitchen. Its role is liquefying food remnants and flushing them down the drain instead of storing them in trash containers. The garbage disposal units have played an important role in improving the quality of human life. They help in eliminating bad odor of the rotting food and in avoiding unnecessary trips to the trash dumpsters. Unfortunately, like most kitchen appliances, the disposal units are not free from damage. But, the good news is that repairing and maintaining these appliances is simple. By taking precautionary measures such as running water through the units while operating them, preventing fiber foods and large particles from entering into it; the garbage disposal unit will run effectively without any problems.

How the garbage disposal works

The garbage disposal units come in different sizes, shapes and power capacities but, they are generally the same. Each unit consist of the flywheel, mortar, impellers and drainage pipes. The mortar makes the flywheel which is attached to the impellers rotate thus breaking the food remnants. The broken food remnants are then drained using water through the drain pipes. In the process, these appliances may become ineffective and require some repair.

Garbage Disposal tips – Repairing them

Tip#1. Repairing Worn out impellers

Impellers continuously crush food materials therefore they are more likely to suffer from wear and tear compared to other parts. Worn out impellers cause the mortar to overheating and stop working. In such case, you can simply sharpen the impellers. If sharpening fails to give good results, replace the impellers. First, disengage the unit by taking off all the fittings, trip breaker and the fuse. Then, twist the garbage disposal to remove the support ring. Next, remove the flywheel by loosening its nuts. You can now replace the impellers or sharpen them based on the severity of the wear and tear.

Tip#2. Unclogged the Drain Pipe

Sometimes, the drain pipe may clog due to the large or fiber food material thrown into the unit. One can easily unclog the drain pipes by using the traditional drain cleaners. However, if the drain cleaner does not rectify the problem, you can use a wrench to correct the problem. Disconnect the P-trap fitting using the wrench. After removing the p-trap, identify the blockage and remove it. The P-trap fitting is the 90 degrees shaped feature outside the U-bend.

Tip#3. Repairing Leakage

Leaking water is a common problem with garbage disposal units. If the disposal unit is leaking from below, replace the flywheel’s seal. To do this, disengage the garbage disposal unit from the drain pipe, remove the worn out seal and replace it with a new one. After replacing it, fit the flywheel back.

Tip#4. Repairing a stuck flywheel

Other cases, one may face the problem of dealing with a stuck flywheel. The stuck flywheel may cause overheating of the mortar and if it is not repaired, it can damage the mortar. To address the issue, insert a hex wrench in the hex hole and rotate the flywheel in both direction. The hex wrench makes the flywheel and shaft rotate therefore resolving the problem. In absence of the hex hole, insert a broom handle into the drain hole to move impellers in all directions, which will in-turn move the flywheel.

With the above garbage disposal tips, you will be in a position to keep your disposal unit always running smoothly.
